MAT6292   Structure, Properties and Modelling of Metallic Materials   (15 credits)

Year Running: 2017/2018
Credit level: F7
Additional Information   Yes, this unit is specific to the Department of Materials Science & Engineering. This unit requires significant background knowledge in many areas.

Description

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of the crystal structure, mechanical properties and modelling methodologies of metallic materials to lay a foundation for optimising microstructure and processing of metallic components. Topics covered include: (a) fundamentals of metallic bonding and crystal structures (b) defects within crystals (c) x-ray diffraction (d) basic concepts of standard mechanical properties and the underlying physical reasons that produce variations in these properties (e) modelling techniques covering a range of time and length scales for the prediction and understanding of the structure and properties of materials.
